What: Dr. Wiest will discuss his book Dogwood, which traces the experience of the 150th Combat Engineers of the Mississippi National Guard in their 2005 tour in Iraq, centered on the forward operating base Dogwood. Comprising youth hoping to attain a way out of grinding poverty, women seeking to break barriers, and patriots answering their nation’s call after 9/11, the 150th represented nearly all of what America had to offer in 2005.
Where: The National Guard Memorial building’s Montgomery Room.
When: Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at 2 pm EST.
Why: The National Guard Educational Foundation’s goal is to tell the Guard’s story and educate the public about the Guard’s rich history and continuing contributions. Dogwood is the first major history of citizen soldiers in the War on Terror.
