A Presentation with Judy Reed
Who: Judy Reed, author of From Bataan to Freedom: The World War II Odyssey of Errett Louis Lujan Through the Death March and Five Japanese POW Camps, and the daughter of Lujan, a New Mexico National Guardsman who survived his ordeal.
What: Judy Reed will relate her father’s experiences, sometimes through the lens of his war diaries, sometimes through pivotal points in history, sometimes through letters his family wrote to him, and sometimes through those who trained, fought, and were imprisoned with him. Errett Lujan was part of the New Mexico National Guard’s 200th Coastal Artillery, the largest regiment in the Philippines when war broke out there and in Hawaii. Lujan survived the invasion, the Bataan Death March, and more than three years in POW camps, two of which were in Japan.
Where: The National Guard Memorial building’s Montgomery Room.
When: Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 3 pm EST.
Why: 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the American victory over Japan and the end of WWII. September is the specific month of Victory over Japan Day, or VJ Day, when Imperial Japan formally surrendered aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay and when Errett was liberated.
