Major General R. Martin Umbarger was appointed as The Adjutant General of Indiana on 11 March 2004 and reappointed by Governor Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. on 1 December 2004. As The Adjutant General, Major General Umbarger’s primary focus is to lead the Indiana Army and Air National Guard.
Major General Umbarger began his career as an enlisted soldier for the Indiana Army National Guard in 1969. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Infantry Branch, in June 1971 after graduating from the Indiana Military Academy. Prior to his current assignment, Major General Umbarger served as the Deputy Commanding General (Reserve Component) United States Forces Command. Other notable assignments include the Assistant Division Comander for Training, 38th Infantry Division (Mechanized) and Commanding General of the 76th Infantry Brigade (Separate), one of fifteen Enhanced Brigades in the Army National Guard. Under Major General Umbarger’s leadership the 76th Infantry Brigade (Separate) executed a very successful Deployment and Rotation at the Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk, Louisiana in May of 2000.
